The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  Galatians 5:22

The Fruit of Peace

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. Psalms 34:19

What we are holding onto determines the outcome.

Who we are holding onto reflects our behavior.

I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.   John 15:5

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.  John 14:27

And he will be called:Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6b

And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Peace is not an emotion, it is a Person.

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.  John 16:33

May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. I Thessalonians 5:3

Speaker 1:

All right, all right, simmer down, simmer down. I know how much you love each other. That's so sweet. You know, I've been in churches before and they tell people to turn around and everybody's like that, ain't y'all? That ain't real late. You guys love each other and I love you.

Speaker 1:

My name is Pastor Angela. I'm Pastor Sean's wife and we started this sweet church in our house seven years ago in our living room, and, my goodness, you've grown. You're doing so well. I just have two things to tell you, and then we're going to get on with the show. But number one is there a dream team in the house? Yes, the dream team is here. The dream team is our volunteer base for Relay. If you want to serve, that is where it's at. They've got matching T-shirts and everything, and tonight at 6 o'clock is join the team dinner. If you maybe just want dinner. Maybe you just want a free dinner, maybe a free T-shirt, but you can come at 6 o'clock, get plugged in, figure out where you can serve. Where do you fit in the family of God? Right here at Relate, and so it takes about an hour and a half. It's not too long. Bring the kids at Relate, and so it takes about an hour and a half, it's not too long. Bring the kids, it's very easy and it's very laid back as most things are here at Relate.

Speaker 1:

And number two who went to a small group this week? Anybody? Yes, we kicked off a small. Our small groups, our summer small groups. We are doing fruitful summer. We are believing that our families, our marriages, our kids are going to be fruitful this summer. So we are studying the nine fruits of the spirit every Sunday and you guys are in for a treat today because my mama is preaching the house down. Listen. One of the teenagers asked me this morning Pastor Angie, are you preaching today? I said no one is greater than me has come. She rocked it for service and I'm afraid she was just getting started. Honestly, I think you're in for it. So we are going to go with fruitful summer this morning and I don't want to hold this one more second. Here we go, good morning everybody.

Speaker 2:

Good morning. Excuse the stage hands. They're trying, amen, bring it over here, gentlemen. They're trying, amen, bring it over here, gentlemen. Thank you for your help. I could not do without a good staff. Amen, amen. And these guys are wonderful to help me today. I promise not to get you guys messy Scoot a little bit more. See the center. I have to have things in the center, thank you. Thank you so much, oh, and welcome to Relate those of you that are guests today. I'm glad you're here. We're going to have a wonderful time in the house of the Lord and I pray that you will receive a word from God. So you know, we're on a fruitful summer. And Pastor Angie, my wonderful daughter, I'm so happy that I get to be in relate with Pastor Sean and Angela.

Speaker 2:

She spoke on patience last week. My goodness, what a wonderful message that was, wasn't it? One that stays with us, one that stays with us, and I want to thank Pastor Sean, my one and only son-in-law, son-in-love, with me, to help me and support the work that God's trying to do in my own ministry and life. And he asked me to speak on the fruit of the Spirit, the next one that he wanted to talk about. So you might say, oh well, that was a wonderful thought. And so he asked me to speak on. The fruit of the Spirit is peace. And you might say, oh, that's nice peace. We know what peace is. No honey bear, you do not.

Speaker 2:

There's different kinds of peace that have been brought up in our world, and I'm just going to refer us to a few of them, because I want you to see the different symbolic issues that these icons have put in our hearts. The first one is what is this symbol? Peace, yes, but you know what? This symbol was actually activated by a person who was a political figure, who said no problems, I got this, and those of you that are above 50 years old know exactly what I'm talking about. If you don't, well, you don't.

Speaker 2:

And then there are those who believe in the olive branch of peace, and that is where nations extend the olive branch. We need some of that in this world, don't we? And they think well, we'll just get nations to be nice to each other, everything will be just fine. And then there are those in the ecumenical movement that they format. The theory that says let's just all get along Doesn't quite work that way either. And then we have the humanistic form of peace which says just put your thumb and your fingers together and hum. That ain't gutted either. But actually one cannot truly find peace without the process of going through a struggle.

Speaker 2:

Now, finding my own way along life's road has been quite a challenge, I might tell you. Without going into detail, I can tell you that the presence of the Lord has been what has sustained me, kept me standing up strong, put a word of testimony in my mouth and brought me through many a fiery trial, kind of like the three Hebrew children and the fire. Oh no, that kind of stuff's not supposed to happen. Or how about the man in the lion's den? That's not supposed to happen. When you serve the Lord, nothing bad's going to ever happen. Or how about David facing Goliath? I can name you a hundred things that happened in the word of God to men and women who served the Lord, that the unexpected trial and war came upon them, but the Lord gave them the victory and they walked in peace. We're going to talk about that. So the training, fields of education that I personally have learned just a couple, three of them maybe.

Speaker 2:

I've been through different bouts with cancer, different kinds of cancer, but I'm still here. I've been through the loss of buildings due to weather situations, but I'm still here. I've been through the loss of churches and ministries and buildings that were taken from us, but I'm still serving the Lord. I've been through the time where I sleep in a house at night when Angela Joy, the angel of joy in my life that's what her name means was about five years old and in the middle of the night we had a gentleman spending the night with us. We didn't realize he had an issue, but he did. He was an arsonist. He burned our house down with us in it. I'm still here and so is she.

Speaker 2:

So a variety of things happen in the believer's life that don't make you think you got peace, but I'm still here. You see, life is made up of milestones. All along behind me is a whole line of stones that have been records made of the presence of the Lord and the goodness of God, no matter what. In the last seven years my family and I have lost six of the key major people in our lives to death, and we still here and we still serving God. What causes you to have that kind of ability? What is it that puts that spark of joy in you.

Speaker 2:

I'll tell you what it is. It's the peace that passes all understanding. When his peace comes, he holds you securely and there's internal peace in spite of it all. You sitting here today you've been through difficulties too. My goodness, you've got a whole list of milestones behind you that are your personal experience of what God has done in your life. Psalms 34, 19 says many, many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. That's why you can turn to your neighbor and say I'm still here. I'm still here.

Speaker 2:

So I want to give you some key things that help you understand what peace really is. It's what we are holding on to in a life storm that determines the outcome, and who we are holding on in the storm reflects our behavior. Now you know, if you grab a tube of toothpaste and you squeeze it, what's going to happen Toothpaste coming out because you put pressure on it. What we are internally shows in the fight externally. So it's important for us to all be able to take a good look at ourselves and say do I have the fruit of peace in my life? Am I really operating in peace here?

Speaker 2:

Before I tell you what the secret is about peace. Let me tell you what it's not. Peace is not human opinions and decisions, because they often the repercussions, the long lasting train of events that happens don't end up with peace. Material goods don't bring peace. Why? Because they can be stolen, they can rust, they can ruin, they get outdated. So material goods don't bring peace. Young people, I want to tell you today that financial security is not the definition of peace, because the markets are high today. They go on tomorrow. Liquid money is not a source of peace. The pride of life does not cause peace to come within. The pride of life just leads to an inflated ego. Following one's own dreams does not build peace, but it builds unending labor, more responsibility. You can build a great dream, but it builds unending labor. More responsibility you can build a great dream, but the dream will own you. So what is peace? How am I going to get through life with peace? There is a genuine peace that does exist, but it comes from God.

Speaker 2:

I want to liken this fruit of peace to a certain fruit that we all like to enjoy in the summertime, and that's watermelon. Yeah, watermelon, it's refreshing when it's ripe and when it's ice cold, whoo, it's good, put a little salt on it. That's what I'm saying. But can you describe adequately what watermelon tastes like? It don't taste like lemon, it don't taste like kiwi, it don't taste like apples, don't taste like oranges. What does it taste like? It's a very unique flavor, isn't it Very special? It's not hearty. You can't boil it. You can't grill it and put barbecue sauce on it. You can't stir fry it with eggs and put it in a taco. It's made, created by God to be eaten fresh and raw. Right, it is a delicious taste that's unlike anything else.

Speaker 2:

Now I want to talk to you about a watermelon. Today. Y'all want to go with me to the watermelon patch. Now put your seatbelts on. We're going to talk about the fruit of peace, the real fruit of peace. The reason I've chosen watermelon to represent the fruit of the spirit is peace. Is this? A watermelon has to stay connected to the vine to keep growing right. If it's going to reach maturity and the full potential of the fruit, it's got to stay on the vine. Now, bananas you can cut them off their stalk green and let them ripen in the house. You can do the same with avocado, but you cannot do that with watermelon. It has to reach its full potential connected to that vine. Well, it's like real peace. Real peace is raw, it's fresh, it's new, it's distinct. It's not like any other fruit in your life.

Speaker 2:

My Relate family, I brought y'all a treat today. When you leave the service this morning, after you've come to the altar and prayed are you listening to me? Some of y'all laughing, but you're going to want to when I get done I want to say a big thank you to the Superwoman Singles small group in the house Because they helped me make the treat for you. We created little cups of watermelon treats that, after this service and after you've prayed, you can welcome yourself and receive some on your way out this morning. Amen, amen. So thank you. And if you are looking for a small group and you're a single woman, join the most powerful, successful, business-minded, truth-filling, awesome women. But you got to be a single woman to join. Sorry, we're exclusive.

Speaker 2:

Let me show you something that the word of the Lord says In John 15, 5,. It says I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit. For apart from me, what's it say? Ooh, apart from me. So for us to be connected in Christ means we got to stay on that vine, don't we? We got to stay connected. This watermelon baby right here is ripe right now, but if they had picked this too soon, it would not end up being this marvelous 40 pound piece of fruit that it is today. I am the vine, marvelous 40-pound piece of fruit that it is today. I am the vine. You are the branches.

Speaker 2:

When the fruit of the Spirit, which is the Spirit of Jesus, rests in us and we are connected to that vine, there is peace, because the vine itself is giving you these things grace and knowledge and anointing and love and all the fruit. He's giving you deliverance. He's giving you freedom. He's giving you the ability to see beyond the natural. He's given you the fruit of living life to the fullness, abundant life. But you cannot have those things without staying on the vine. He'll give you patience. He'll give you long suffering. He'll give you ability. He gives you a creative mind. He gives you the desire and the ability to fulfill it. He'll give you a vision and then give you the providence to make it happen. When you stay connected on the vine, it's him flowing in us that brings the peace.

Speaker 2:

The essential and most critical need of the hour of every life sitting here today is to stay firmly connected in relationship with Jesus, no matter what happens in life. You know, often I'm concerned that believers have this false belief system going that says, well, if I serve the Lord, nothing bad's going to happen to me. Well, my friend, that is just not true. I'll tell you why. Because we already know. We've already been told. The problem is we don't know what the word says, so we're just left in the dark. But here's what Jesus said to tell us through the word of God.

Speaker 2:

John 10, 10 says the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly. Amen. Two different kingdoms right here in one verse the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom of light. Jesus came to give us life right, an abundant life.

Speaker 2:

What did the devil come to do? So we are this little watermelon right here growing on the vine, doing our little part, live for God. Nothing bad's going to happen to me. I just keep on paying my tithe and serving God. It's going to be all right.

Speaker 2:

No, it's not, because we have an enemy and we live in a fallen world. We're not in heaven yet, baby, we're not there. We have that seed of eternity in our hearts that makes us long for things to be right, for things to never end. For us to have eternity means I want things to be made right. Yes, that's in our heart, but we live in a fallen world. And since we do, should we not recognize? How do I hold on to my peace? What is it that's taking my peace?

Speaker 2:

So we're just going about our little lives, living our little best life and doing what we can, and all of a sudden, little things start happening Because the enemy starts paying attention to us. For, you know it, we're using bad words. Well, just little slivers. Oh, it's just a little white lie. There's either a lie or there's not a lie. Well, nobody cares, nobody's watching, it don't hurt nobody, anyway, it ain't hurting nobody, but it's hurting you.

Speaker 2:

So we grow in and we think and we're doing fine, and all the while the enemy's taking little nicks out of us and paying attention to how we respond. If we don't stop it, he'd just keep on going. We don't change the way we thinking, the way we live in, the way we're doing. Our lifestyle just gets lax and more lax and more lax, and we make excuses for ourselves. Well, everybody else does it, honey, you're not a lemon and we don't run off the cliff. We serve the Lord, god Almighty.

Speaker 2:

But in the meantime, the enemy, who sees us and says wait, they're not, they're going to be a threat if I don't do something about them. So he starts putting little marks on our testimony and our reputation. He starts leaving marks on us. We're like well, I can't believe this stuff's happening to me. Well, honey, it's happening. And what are we doing about it? How can we stop it? What are we saying? That's going to cause it to end? Put the knife down, devil, and get out.

Speaker 2:

But watermelons are delicate. We get our feelings hurt real easy. We don't give anybody else leeway, but we give it to ourselves. So the enemy comes along and says well, I'm just going to disconnect them from the vine. How am I going to disconnect them? They've let me get away with these things. Let me see if I can't do something else a little bit more.

Speaker 2:

So we start giving other ideas introduced to our mind. Well, you know, if they have their club on Sunday mornings, y'all should just join. And I should just join Really, really, and watch what the enemy's doing to our lives. He just keeps on taking little bites, little tiny bites, and seeing how we're going to respond If we don't back him off. He's going to knock on the door and say I'm coming in for a cup of coffee. And if you open the door and let him in, you gave him a seat at the table door. And let him in, you gave him a seat at the table. The devil cannot connect you. The devil cannot disconnect you from God, but you can disconnect yourself.

Speaker 2:

So he comes along and says well, you know what I'm going to. Just see they doing anything, they saying anything, anybody trying to stop us. Let's cut it off, honey. I think we need to find a new church. I think we better go somewhere else.

Speaker 2:

We're not being fed. I've heard that so many times in my life. Let me just take and I always feel sorry for them because I'm like my God they don't know. They just don't know. They're not feeding themselves on the vine. They're expecting the pastor to do all the feeding, expecting Sunday morning to give me enough food to last all week. Honey, I won't last until tonight if I don't eat real food. What makes me think I can go from Sunday morning to Sunday morning and stay strong spiritually without eating myself. So the enemy says I'm gonna steal from them, so I'm gonna do something that let's see if they take this Church hurt. You didn't stop it, you didn't say well, everybody's a human being, we all make mistakes. I forgive you, let's move on. No, no, no.

Speaker 2:

Now we're offended, but with the offense comes disconnection. Disconnection from a brother and a sister in Christ, a disconnection from a marriage, a disconnection from others who are also trying to serve God. We don't understand who's behind all this to start with. Well, then the devil gets serious, because now you don't have a covering. Your church home is your covering? It's so important. Who's going to bury you when you die if you don't have a church home? Now I can say these things because I'm a widow. But I'm telling you the truth, is it not the truth? It's so hard and it's so tough in life anyway. We need a church, family, a place to belong to, somewhere to come in out of the rain, come in out of the hard cold, somebody to pray with you, somebody to lean on you. But when we get by ourself, we're saying I'm just me and Jesus got our own thing going.

Speaker 2:

That's a song. If you're old, you know it. If you don't, you don't need to know it. Don't think just because you leave a church the devil's gonna quit working on your life. It just got harder because now you don't have a covering, you don't have a man of god to stand in the gap and make up the hedge for you. You don't have a sunday school teacher that can teach your children the right ways to serve god. You don't have a youth director that's going to help your young people stay on the straight path. So the devil says okay, gotcha, I got you good this time. I got you good this time. See, this is what you get when you serve God. You ain't serving God, honey, don't fool yourself. I'm smiling because I'm trying not to hurt your feelings, but it's the truth. So he brings other interests to us. The love of money kicks in pride of life. Oh, I gotta have three businesses because I'm gonna be somebody, honey. We ain't gonna be nobody. It's jesus, that's somebody, not us.

Speaker 2:

Where did we get off track and think we're in the church of god for an agenda and a position and somebody in this world? This platform's for the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ and nobody else. So the enemy all the time is wearing us down, wearing at our peace, trying to pull us away from our calling, our direction, the purpose for which God made us, and now we're all getting deluded in other things. Well, I ain't got time to help in the church because I'm busy with this, I'm busy with that. You know what? I've been through so many things in my life that I've realized just count it all joy. None of this is going to heaven with me anyway. So count it all joy. Would you reach those kinds of places? Because you have seen the effects and the after effects when you serve the Lord and when you don't, when you live in the straight and narrow and when you're not.

Speaker 2:

The enemy, who came to kill, steal and destroy, does not stop, it just intensifies more. Well, I got time to read my, my bible. I'm watching this series on tv. I got to see the ending of this. Good, the devil says good, keep watching. Well, I know they don't live right on that show and they just you know. Good, he's putting marks in our morality.

Speaker 2:

We're accepting truths, we call truths. They're not truth at all, they're lies. But we don't take it time to cultivate because we're slowly getting disconnected from the vine. Our peace is starting to get rattled. We're starting to get anxious about stuff. We're starting to see my goodness, I'm. We're starting to see, my goodness, I'm really in distress. I'm suffering with depression now, yeah, we are.

Speaker 2:

The problem is, we are not called to live by our feelings. We're called to live by the Holy Spirit. Feelings will lead us astray. When the devil thinks he's got a little bit of a toehold in your life, sometimes he'll pull the big guns, sometimes when you're not expecting it. Do you often see when the big guns are coming? No, you do not see them.

Speaker 2:

Well, I'm just going to miss church a little bit. I don't need to go to church to be saved. How's the pastor going to help me live my life? And for you know it, he's done taken off and he's done wrecked everything in our hearts, everything in our lives. It's all being destroyed.

Speaker 2:

And then we say where's god? God, oh, we blame God. I deal with people all the time in loss and grief. You know they blame more than anybody. They blame God when something goes wrong. But we live in a fallen world and people, they make decisions, and decisions aren't always the right ones when you're not serving God, but here's what we like to do. Well, god, you're not going to fix the issue. I'm going to fix it myself. Take things in my own hands. I don't have to put up with this and I'm just going to fix it myself. The Lord's not working quick enough for me. He's not making it happen. I'm disappointed in what has happened in my life, and so I'm just going to take control of myself.

Speaker 2:

We end up with a big mess when we take matters into our own hands. The end result is never what we wanted. I thought by serving god, all these troubles would have been done and over with by now. I can't believe. He said that she did this. They're doing that. I'm just gonna live my own life and forget the world. Go right ahead and make yourself some mashed watermelon, but you're going to end up with nothing in the end, only to come back to the cross broken. Well, serving God sometimes takes you through the fire and sometimes through the flood, but he'll bring you out into a holy place. But when we run away from the vine, we always end up with destruction.

Speaker 2:

Isaiah 9 in 6 says the most beautiful description of Jesus and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, oh, here it is the prince of peace. Oh, the prince of peace. When we're connected to jesus and his spirit is alive in us, the prince of peace lives in us. Philippians 4 and 7 says and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Here's the problem I have as a Christian leader. I see people whose hearts are troubled, their minds are mixed up, they're in trouble, they're not connected to Jesus, or that wouldn't happen to them. Trouble they're not connected to Jesus, or that wouldn't happen to them. The peace of God will keep. So what is the solution here? It's this one fact Peace is not a feeling, peace is a person. Peace is a person. Peace is a person. He said I'll never leave you and I won't forsake you. He said greater is he that is in you than he that's in the world. He said no weapon formed against you will prosper. We like to quote that. But when we're't stay in Jesus ah, wait a minute it's walking in the spirit of the Lord. Where the fruit of the spirit is alive in us, it changes life for us. John 16, 33,. Jesus said I have told you all this so that you might have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. We're too busy looking at the pain and the sorrow and the trouble and the issues and not looking at Jesus. From whence comes the peace we need to walk through this world? Are you struggling with issues in your own life? You're having a difficult time. Things don't make sense. You feel overwhelmed with what's going on when things are just too much to bear. Isn't it time to come back to Jesus? I'm sorry. It's time to pay attention. You need peace in your life. That peace will not come through mind-altering drugs. There's no peace in that, because you've got to wake up someday and face the real world, peace that you need to pass the stressfulness of this world cannot be found in alcohol, because when the bottle is empty, you still have to face the world. So peace that passes all understanding only comes through Jesus Christ. When we take things in our own hands, this is what we get Destruction A testimony that Paul gave to the church in Philippi when persecution was breaking loose. He said this For I know, as you pray for me and the spirit of Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to my deliverance. You got an issue too big for you today. Getting connected in the spirit of Jesus will lead to your deliverance. If we would grow in stature and be strong in the Lord and the power of his might, it will be because our strength was born often in the fight, because we clung to Jesus and he gave us the ability to get through it. I'll leave you with a verse. It's found in 1 Thessalonians. It says may the God of peace himself oh, I'm so glad to know the peace, the prince of peace Sanctify you wholly. That means completely. And may your spirit, the part that you're anxious about your soul, its part that you're anxious about your soul because anxiety is overwhelming you and your body be kept sound. What does sound mean to you? And blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ? There is a day coming, my friend, when all of this will be done and we will go home. But until then, until then, operating with peace is essential in your life. Would you put your hand on your heart and let me pray for us together? Lord Jesus, I bring every man and woman and boy and girl in this room to you. You know the hearts, you know the lives, you know the situations they are faced with even this moment. I pray, god, that you will come and do a work in our lives. Reconnect us, lord. We seek you. We give our lives to you, lord, and we ask that you would direct each life in the bond of peace with you. In Jesus' name, maybe you've come today and you're between two places of unbelief and belief, fear and faith, worry and trust. Maybe you're between those two and you don't know what to do. You don't know where to turn. Secret is to connect with the vine. Ask the lord to forgive you for walking away, for maybe getting cold in the heart, not being intensely in love with him. That peace, true peace, would come and help you through this tribulation that you're facing. Great peace have they which love thy law and nothing shall offend them. The scripture says my peace I give to you, not as the world gives, give I unto you. That is a certain dimension of living life that is above this world. It is above whatever the enemy can throw at you, the peace of God which passes all understanding. Would you stand with me and and I want us to go before the Lord together, if you've never given your life to Christ and you have never accepted him as your savior. Cross that barrier. Today, from doubt to faith. Trust the Lord to lead you. We're going to pray together, those that need to come closer to the you. We're going to pray together, those that need to come closer to the Lord. Maybe you've gotten cold in your heart and you've disconnected from him. We're going to go to the Father and ask him connect us again. Jesus, would you repeat after me, all of us together. Dear Jesus, I come and give you my heart. Forgive me of my sins, forgive me of my own opinions and my own decisions I have made. I need to be connected to the vine. I need my peace restored. So I give my life to you, jesus, and I ask you to come into my life. I give myself to you. I dedicate my life back to you, jesus. Let your will be done, your kingdom come in my life. In Jesus' name, amen. I'm going to call the prayer partners forward. Come and stand. Maybe you know someone who's standing in a terrible situation. You need to come and have them prayed for with a prayer partner who's filled with faith. Today, I want to invite you to take a moment and come forward and pray and seek the Lord and ask Him to take a place in your own life and in the lives of those you need to be saved. In the name of Jesus, the rest of you, thank you for coming today. May you walk in the peace of the Lord In Jesus' name, amen.
